Coffee tasting

We finally set the date for our Roaster tasting event.

It will be on Oct 17th at 10:00 AM. The coffee shop won't be open for normal business activities, which means we will not serve breakfast nor lunch on this date. We will have finger food and lots of amazing espresso. This event is for coffee lover who appreciate exceptional espresso drinks.

We will taste Herkimer, Caffe Vita, Stumptown and Intelligentsia. At the end, we will all decide who gets to be our next year's roaster.

Where is the Owner?

Many customers have often wonder how come I am not in the coffee shop all the time.
Mi Piace has been a great learning experience for me. At first, I was under the impression that as long as all my employees are well trained. I can focus on other areas in my life. Was I wrong? haha! Many of you probably already knew, I still have another full time job as a buyer. Therefore, I am usually traveling between Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Shanghai. I was born in Taiwan, rasied in Taiwan and went to High School in Santa Monica, CA. Later on, I moved to Hong Kong and other countries in Asia for my work. The reason I am here is because I really liked San Juan island. I used to vacation here and I simply fall in love with the island.

Lately, I have been tasting all the famous sandwich shops in Seattle and looking for different suppliers for cheese and meat. We are working on the new menu with all the exciting recipes I have gathered together. We are pushing the new menu by Oct 1st and we will also have Debbie from the Duck Soup to help us. There will be New Menu parties and music nights going on this fall and I will post all of them on my blog.

Quiche

Many people love our quiches at the Farmer's Market and have asked us to prepare more during the week when there is no farmer's market. So we now freeze the quiches for customers who would like to buy whole quiches. Please ask the baristas if you like to buy them. They are only $18.00 for a whole quiche.

Compost - coffee grounds anyone?

At Mi Piace we have a bucket for all the coffee grounds and I have been using it for my garden.
You can either spread the coffee ground around the garden to prevent bugs or you can use it as compost and worms LOVE coffee ground. I think worms get caffeine high also.
My compost had reached its limit and I really hate to see all the coffee ground not being used.

Coffee Fest in Seattle

The coffee fest this year happens to be in Seattle again around Sep 12-14th
Anyone who is interested of going can contact me at Mi Piace and maybe we can all car-pool

For me the most exciting reasons for going to the show would be watching barista competition and of course meeting all the vendors whom have been supporting us and make everything possible. You do get to taste all the best coffee there for free too. That might be a plus for some people. Please contact Ada if you are interested.

New Prices on Coffee

We have tried so hard not to increase our prices and most people to compare my coffee prices with Roy's. The difference is Roy's coffee doesn't have rent or utility bills like Mi Piace.
The landlord of Mi Piace (Charles Thomas) had recently increased our rent dramatically.
Our coffee price also went up almost 20%. We have been absorbing all the increased on food cost and many other areas to keep our customers happy. But we can't survive by losing money making coffee. We are sorry this would have to happen but we do have to increase approximately 10% on all our drinks starting September 1st.

Help Wanted

I know working at the coffee house might not be the most rewarding place financially on Friday Harbor and working for me might be even tougher because I am such a perfectionist in many ways and also a clean freak. However, I think I am one of the very nice boss on this island and I don't usually get disappointed unless someone is giving me doubts on honesty.

We need baristas who knows the basics of coooking and baking pastry. I will train personally on every single details but I need someone who will not cheat the tiny steps to make things look nicer or taste better. Also if you are not a clean freak so enjoy keeping the working enviroment clean and neat; probably this is not the place for you. We require our employees to mop the floor every night before leaving the shop.

New Hours

Me and my stuffs really like Mi Piace to be the place for people
to hang out and relax, and we have work so hard to keep the place open till
late aftenoon. But opening long hours is not really financially affordable for us at this point.

Plus it takes at least weeks to train a barista that would qualify to be behind the counter of Mi Piace. With the fact that most my girls are leaving for college, I just don't have enough professional baristas to keep the place open.

We are still working toward opening till 4pm and hopfully that will happen soon.
But for now, we are very sorry that we will need to close at 2pm.

Summer Picnics

The summer is here and we know how everyone would like to enjoy the outdoors.
Mi Piace now offers Picnic boxes ready to go. Things like Brie Cheese with Honey Comb and Fruit.
Caprese Salad, pasta salad, home made Salsa and Chips and hummus platter also.

We also working on expanding our breakfast menu. We now have Oatmeal with raisin, cinnamon, fruit and apple sauce. Breakfast sandwiches; sausage, cheese and egg or ham and cheese and egg or bacon and cheese and egg. We also offer home made Granola; you can either have it with milk, soy milk or with yogurt and fruit.

Free WiFi for our customers from 7am to 6pm.

Coffee Prices

Yes, we did raised our coffee prices but it's because everything has gone up.
Milk price, coffee price, UPS and even our cups had gone up quiet a bit.
We will reconsider and maybe adjust the price the best we could. But we wouldn't
have done it if our suppliers didn't raised a big jump in prices. We want to do the best we could to keep everyone happy. But at the same time, we need to make sure we can survive the inflation also.

We apologize but we do hear your comments and we will do the best we could.

Palau

So many beautiful fishes under the water of Palau.
Palau is among 560 small islands right below Philipines in Asia. The island only has summer and it's simply amazing. Remind me of Hawaii many years ago.

Jelly Fishes; these are none-poisonous jelly fishes. You can touch them, feel them and swim among them. Definitelly my favorite part of this trip. I have never felt something so soft, smooth; just like touching the jello.

San Juan Island Walk

Had an afternoon walk today along the American Camp area on Friday Harbor.
Its absolutely beautiful and peaceful; you almost wonder if your mind can be as calm as
the ocean. Blue sky in CA is like histroy now. But here on the island, the sky is always blue, the water is always clear, the air is always fresh. The little paradise on earth that hasn't been polluted by human.
